According to a graphic design professor I had in college, the vast majority of the US population chooses blue as their favorite color, and it’s relatively uncommon to find someone that chooses differently. Before she shared this factoid with us, she went around the room and asked everyone in the twenty-person class what color they liked best. Indeed, 19 people said blue. I was the lone holdout – my favorite color has been red for a long, long time (when I was very little, it was black). And not just any red – more specifically, scarlet. Not quite dark enough to be maroon, but darker and richer than a fire engine. I am endlessly in search of bags (and anything else) that fit this criteria, and in my experience, a good red bag is unfortunately hard to find.Which is why I was so pleased to see the brand new Burberry Leather Satchel. Because of the nature of red pigmentation, in can be really difficult to get a rich color on leather and red bags often lack the pop that I desire. Not so with this purse, though – the red is deep and lovely (patent or glazed red bags usually have better luck getting this effect) and the bag’s design is simple enough to show off the great color.

Burberry Leather Satchel
Friday, September 4th, 2009Burberry Metallic Leather Hobo
Friday, September 4th, 2009As we wait for Fall 2009 bag collection to slowly (really slowly) hit stores, some collections are bound to come out earlier than others. In the past few days, a number of new Burberry bags have been popping up around the Internet, so if you see a lot of them in the near future, that’s why. One of my favorites of the new crop is the Burberry Metallic Leather Hobo. It’s well-documented that dark silver or pewter is my favorite of all the metallics and probably my favorite neutral, and this is a great example. It has a great shimmer without being too shiny and over-the-top like lighter silvers can tend to be, and it would work well in any kind of weather. Also, I’m usually very anti-logo, but I think the way that Burberry subtly embossed their signature plaid into the soft leather is really creative – it gives the bag a bit of branding and visual interest all wrapped in one. If you’re looking for a slightly glam neutral for fall, I’d go ahead and pick this one up.
Valentino Rosier Tote
Friday, September 4th, 2009Sweet heavens, I don’t know what has come over me… I actually love this bag! I am not usually one for an over the top frilly bag. I know a lot of you would disagree with me, but hey, that’s just the way I am. However, today, if I didn’t have some sort of self restraint I actually might go out and buy this bag. As of late, Valentino has been adorning many of its bag with rose-like features. While some of these bags are a little over the top for me, I am rather happy with this one.The Valentino Rosier Tote is a lovely way to express your feminine side. Earlier this year, we covered the Valentino Floral Applique Satchel which reminds me quite a bit of this bag, except for the color. This particular tote is adorned with gorgeous silk taffeta roses. The patent leather trim is actually a perfect contrast against the silk roses. While we are in the midst of the Summer months, I can see this bag getting plenty of use. Whether you carry it to a park, to dinner, even to a BBQ, this bag would be a perfect accent to any outfit. Plus, since the color scheme is on the darker side, you can actually try and pull this look off during the Fall and perhaps even the Winter!
Fendi Beaded Clutch
Friday, September 4th, 2009
Any time I see a bag like this from Fendi, I always get nostalgic for the early aughts and Sex and the City. Back then, baguettes ruled the handbag world and those four girls always had someplace to carry a sparkly, beaded, obnoxious bag (not to mention something fabulous with which to wear it). And despite the fact that I love the reminder of that period of time, I think that’s my chief criticism of the Fendi Beaded Clutch. It feels just like Sex and the City did, which is to say it doesn’t feel new. Fendi, as a brand, seems to be stuck circa 1999 in their accessories department, and although the baguettes are an important part of handbag history, I wish they’d innovate a little more. The Spy bag was great, of course, and a lot of people liked the B-Bag, but if you’re only producing two popular handbags per decade, you need to get with the program. As a brand, they’ve got such amazing resources and possibilities, I’m not sure why they’re still living in the past.
Botkier Venice Satchel
Friday, September 4th, 2009Hobo or Satchel: Which style do you prefer? That ultimately depends on how you like to wear your handbags. Many of you loved the Botkier Venice Hobo, as did the entire PurseBlog team, and now we will bring you information on the fraternal sister of the the bag. The Botkier Venice Satchel’s design contains every aspect of the hobo that we found so edgy and cool: the exposed zips, tassels and smooshy leather. The satchel comes with an optional shoulder strap. I am more of a hobo girl, give me my bag and let me sling it over my shoulder, but I have a soft spot for satchels with shoulder straps. Still throwing it over my shoulder and still loving the look. The colors of Botkier bag I love most and this satchel is available in caramel or sunshine yellow. Now I ask you; hobo or satchel in the Botkier Venice bag?
Chloé Elsie Lurex Shoulder Bag
Friday, September 4th, 2009Elsie is quite a unique name, and I actually know two Elsies and one Elsa, so I’m a bit biased. But the Chloé Elsie Lurex Shoulder Bag is not quite as unique as the name. Sure, it has a bit of exotic, with its alligator print, but that’s about the extent of its exotic and unique identity. However, if you want a classy, classic bag and are tired of Chanel, then this is certainly a great choice. If there are two things that Chloé has mastered, it’s great, heavy leather and the fact that the devil is in the details (metaphorically speaking).
This bag is made of Lurex, so no great heavy leather here. But there are some extremely subtle details that are worth noting: the twisted rope handles and the interesting clover-shaped turn-lock closure. So yes, it looks cool and classic and all that, but I think something is missing here. There’s a hint of blahness that is just not going away for me. I’d say, pair it with an amazing outfit to distract from that. Otherwise, I’m not sure this bag is worth its high price of more than a grand.
